A difficult situation?

so there is a girl, who is smart, beautiful, and really artistic and unique. so whats the catch? well up until today she was sorta seeing someone. by which i mean they hung out and liked eachother, but she told him that it would never work between them. i go to a very small school around 10-15 ppl. i dont want to act too fast and have her think im trying to get lucky. but the guy is a friend of mine and i dont wnat him to get mad at me. another thing tho i really reall reall like her. what should i do?
