In admissions, this sometimes gets referred to as the i-broke-my-leg-and-it-made-me-fail-chemi… excuse. There are absolutely legitimate reasons why people have poor academic performances at given times in their lives (like losing a parent or suffering from serious medical conditions), but saying that you were diagnosed with ADHD and then your average went up 6 points is not the explanation admissions officers want to hear for a mediocre GPA. They would rather hear someone take responsibility for their academic history than make excuses for it.
