US-Asian Economic interdependency--a Blessing or Curse?

The theory is that economic interdependency between the US and Asian countries (Japan and China) is beneficial for all countries involved. But consider a situation in which the Chinese or Japanese economy is still robust despite economic woes in the US. Wouldn't it actually help the US in the long run, as it would allow US companies to export more to their Asian trading partners, who will be able to afford more American goods?
